Max’s Room
Hi, friends!
Today I’m sharing a little tour of Max’s room. This space started as a quintessential blank canvas: builder grade everything, taupe walls and cheap white trim, no window casings, brown carpet—it wasn’t much to look at, but I knew it could be something special with a bit of elbow grease!
The first thing we did was paint the room white. Specifically Bistro White, by Valspar. The room is very small, so making this change already made a huge difference in helping the space to feel bigger and brighter.
Next, we added beadboard about halfway up the walls and swapped out the trim and baseboard for a more craftsman style option. We cased out the windows as well, which made them look so much bigger! Millwork has a way of adding charm and character to a space, I think.
At first, I painted the woodwork a muted green color. Immediately, I didn’t love it, but I decided to live with it for awhile before deciding whether or not to change it. Ultimately, I ended up repainting everything a more neutral color: SW Worldly Gray. It’s a perfect, light greige and I couldn’t be happier with my decision!
Once the remodeling tasks were done, I was able to start decorating! This little corner with the built-in peg rail is the perfect mix of form and function. Max uses it to hang sweaters, toys, etc.
I chose a heavy lined curtain in a plaid print to frame the window and provide added light blocking when needed. The brown tweed is such a vintage boy’s room look, I think!
Both the bed frame and dresser were Facebook Marketplace finds! The bed is a classic spindle style that we painted SW Dovetail (a slightly darker gray than the woodwork).
The dresser is one of my favorite secondhand finds ever. It’s solid wood with dovetail joints and the prettiest vintage drawer pulls. I drove an hour each way to get it, and it was totally worth the trip!
The room is sprinkled with a variety of other treasures, from vintage books to Amish wood toys to thrifted tennis rackets. I wanted this space to be cute, but not too precious (a little boy lives here, after all!) Everything needed to be able to withstand a bit of rough and tumble play.
Because the room is small, I didn’t want to overdo it with bulky furniture. So instead, I utilized baskets to hold things like stuffed animals, train tracks, and other toys. I like finding different sizes and slightly varied colors so that I can group them together and add visual interest while maintaining functionality.
I kept the art simple, with an oversized world map tapestry above the bed and some framed vintage artwork in the peg rail corner. As with the furniture and the color choices, I didn’t want to overwhelm the small space with too much of anything.
The bed linens are simple, too. Just a plain white duvet and a reversible cotton throw. I did have to layer a few pillows though, because I can’t help myself 😄.
That’s all for today, friends!
Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you’ve found a bit of inspiration for your own little guy’s room!
